Sire: PURRUMBETE LEDGERS DREAM. Imported from South America into Australia as one of their original “Big Six” herdsires, LEDGER’S DREAM stood at stud at Windsong Valley Alpacas in western Australia for many years. He is sire and grandsire of many of Australia's most outstanding alpacas, and became one of the most influential herd sires in Australia. LEDGERS DREAM progeny are reknowned for their solid conformation, coverage, lustre, density and fineness of fleece. He has sired over 70 show winning progeny in Australia, including the 2003 National Supreme Champion Fleece & Most Valuable Fleece Winner. There are only TWO offspring of LEDGERS DREAM in the Canadian registry – they are our own ELITE GENERAL LEDGER, and ELITE SHELLY, who is the dam of both FIBRE WORKS DIAMONTE and FIBRE WORKS TECHNICOLOUR.
Dam: ELITE OPHELIA. We purchased LEDGER’s dam, ELITE OPHELIA, in Australia in 1997, on a trip to Australia with Margaret and Jim Brewster, where we both purchased a few top quality bred females, who all carry the herd identifier ‘ELITE’. This was an extremely high-end group of alpacas, and has greatly impacted the quality of Tell Tale Farm’s herd, and the overall Canadian alpaca marketplace. OPHELIA is a gorgeous light brown half-Peruvian female. Conformationally, OPHELIA is very correct and well-balanced, with heavy substance of bone. Her fleece is extremely dense, and coverage is abundant. She was pregnant with LEDGER when she was imported from Australia. Several of OPHELIA’s offspring have been shown successfully in both Canada and the USA, winning first place and Reserve Championships both sides of the border. OPHELIA now resides in Oregon at Crescent Moon Ranch. She produced a bay-black son for them this year – a half-brother for LEDGER.

LEDGER’s life has been quite a saga. We purchased his dam, OPHELIA, several years ago in Australia, and brought her to Canada as part of Margaret Brewster’s “ELITE” importation. At the time we purchased her, OPHELIA was being bred to one of Australia’s top herdsires – LEDGER’S DREAM. When our little “LEDGER” was born eleven months later, we were thrilled that he was a male, as he carried Australia’s best genetics into Canada, and these bloodlines were otherwise not available anywhere in North America. LEDGER was born in the middle of Canadian winter – we had to keep him closed up in the barn for the first few months of his life. He didn’t thrive, of course, being a winter baby in our climate, and that may have been the reason that he was so slow to start breeding as an adult. We will never fully understand why he couldn’t settle females when he was young, since now he is perfectly normal. Being a ‘late bloomer’, LEDGER was five years of age when he settled his first female. Over the next few years, with very limited use, he produced stunning crias. He has truly proven himself, and is an integral part of our herdsire line-up at Tell Tale Farm. Check out his 2007 progeny on the “Crias” page of our website. |
